Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program

imageBarnes and Noble  (B&N) has a great summer reading program where you child can read and record 8 books and get one from the B&N recommended list for free. Click here to learn more.

Reading is a great way to keep the learning process going all summer long in between the family vacations to the beach and barbecues :)! What I love about the B&N Reading program is that your child chooses the 8 books that he/she wishes to read. I’m not a huge fan of preselected books, so this is perfect for the reading needs of my little ones.

Have you read a good book lately? Will you be participating in the Barnes and Noble reading program?

MWC is up and running (after 19 months)!

I’m back! After a 19 month hiatus, I’ve decided to resurrect the Mommy Wisdom Circle (MWC). How do I know it’s been 19 months exactly? Well, when my daughter was born, I wore an invisible Super Mom cape. I thought I could do it all. When she was two months, I launched this site with such big plans. Well, in between those big plans in my head, many things in my life were moving along. For starters, kindergarten happened, followed by first grade (which recently ended. Hello, Summer!) for my son, along with a boatload of enrichment activities (chess, soccer, tennis, his business < – yes, my child started a business, I will be sharing more soon). As for my daughter, she’s now 21 months old and full of life and ENERGY! I chase her everywhere (still don’t understand why I’m battling baby weight gain – I’m mentally digressing here). She’s in a new early learning center and has a social calendar of play dates with classmates and birthday parties and so much more. I say all of this to say that I’ve been busy.

Now that my life is coming together better in terms of children on early sleeping schedules and I’ve found the time to carve out some “Me” time within the 24 hours allotted per day, I can assume the role of updating happenings in my world and planning events for the Mommy Wisdom Circle. My plan is to post weekly and coordinate an event once every three months.

So, what’s been happening in your world? It’s been 19 months, what have I missed?

How do you keep your kids self-esteem tank full?

you're awesomeHappy Monday! I have a question for the moms: In a world where there’s so much bullying and pressure to fit in, how do you keep your kids self-esteem tank full? I’m a proactive parent and try to prevent the low gas in the self esteem tank by having it overflow before its depleted. Recently, I began writing positive messages on the chalk board in my sons room so that it’s the first thing that he sees when he rises. I find that it makes a difference in the way he takes on the day. Even as adults wouldn’t it be nice to open your eyes and see a huge black board with words telling you that you’re awesome today. Just might alter the way we handle the day ourselves. I might have a little more bounce in my step or need one less coffee because hey, I’m awesome J! Share your parenting strategy on keeping the self-esteem high in our youth?

Mommy Wisdom Circle September Brown Bag Discussion

I’m super excited to announce that the Mommy Wisdom Circle (MWC) will be hosting its first lunch time Meet-up.  Bring your brown bag or grab a meal and let’s talk Back to School.

With school in session, now is a great time for us moms to come together to share our plans for helping our little ones transition back to school.  We want to know: How are you transitioning from your summer evenings of play to a regimen of studying? What seems to work well and not so well. What are some tips and strategies for being active in the school, while working full time.

Who should attend? All moms! I’m a firm believer that if you’re new to motherhood or are in the process of raising teens, we can all learn from one another. In many cases, moms raising teens have several lessons learned to share with newer moms. The one thing we all have in common is that we are working moms, juggling the responsibility of being superb employees and rock stars to our little ones. Why not come together, learn from one another over lunch using the one hour that many of us are allotted on the job – smile.

Below are the details.

When: Wednesday, September 26th

Where: TBD (share your restaurant recommendations when you RSVP.  We intend to keep the meetup in the Metro Center area).

Time: 12:30-1:45 p.m.

Event Planning Mode

This weekend was tons of fun — very busy but loads of fun. I managed to squeeze some time in my creative space and did some beading  (see my necklace). However, I spent a great deal of time planning Mommy Wisdom Circle activities.  I’m looking to kick off either a movie and lunch day or a roller skating event with moms and kids. I’m really leaning towards skating. For starters, I can’t skate and believe it or not, I look forward to falling down (pray I don’t break any bones) and secondly, learning how to skate with my son is on my bucket list.

A finalized event announcement will be available soon.

So, how did you spend your weekend? What activities did you do with your kids?

Why the Mommy Wisdom Circle

During your pregnancy were you filled with anxieties, excitement and lots of questions? If you’re anything like me or most new parents, you purchased a handbook (or two, or three) that gave advice on what to expect when expecting and beyond, right? Well, you probably know by now that books can serve as a good guide for starting, but there will always be questions that need answers along the way. The Mommy Wisdom Circle is intended to be that guide to assist you along the way. Here are a few things you should know:

Q.What is the Mommy Wisdom Circle ™?
A. A face to face meet-up in the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia area where moms come together to share their motherhood pearls of wisdom!

Q. Why was this group formed?
A. It’s been on my heart since I had my son almost 6 years ago to put together a meet-up with local moms of little ones. I recall as vividly as can be, being a 25 year old mother without… a clue. I didn’t know about free resources for mothers and children, what state regulations to check for in a childcare, where to find local kid-friendly activities and etc. So, now that I’m expecting my second child, I knew it was time to execute the ideas that have been on my heart. After much consideration and consulting with a focus group of mommies, I decided to follow my heart and establish, the Mommy Wisdom Circle ™

Q. Who can be a part of the Mommy Wisdom Circle ™?
A. If you’re in the Washington DC, MD or VA area and want to join us for some face-to-face mommy and child activities and mom-talk, feel free to become a fan and contact:

**** Please note: While the primary purpose of the MWC is to serve as a face-to-face gathering for moms, its online complement, this blog will serve as an invaluable resource to moms by sharing advice and tips on subjects that most moms struggle with, such as fashion, work life balance and much more.
